The layer Imperiled Mussels displays locations of streams and other waterbodies that are known to contain mussels that are rare, endangered, or threatened in New York. The purpose of the Imperiled Mussels data layer is to inform landowners and projects sponsors of the presence of these vulnerable species to trigger consultation with NYSDEC regarding potential permitting requirements that may be necessary for work in these waters. If you are considering work in these waters, you should contact your regional DEC office for more information about how to proceed with your project.
Imperiled Mussels include those mussels that are listed by NYS as Endangered or Threatened (see https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/7494.html) and that are ranked by New York Natural Heritage Program as Critically Imperiled or Imperiled (S1, S1S2, S2, and S2S3) in New York State (see https://www.nynhp.org/rare-animals/).
